What can I do to stop disease killing blue tits?

A conservation group is asking people to keep a look-out for a bird disease which has killed thousands of blue tits in Germany.

Scientists have confirmed the bacterium Suttonella ornithocola, which causes pneumonia in affected birds, is wiping out huge swathes of the bird in the west of the country.

Nature lovers are being asked to keep an eye on their tits, paying particular attention to their eyes and beaks. A tell-tale sign of the illness is an open beak and outstretched tongue as well as closed eyes. So far there have only been sporadic cases in England.

Poorly blue tits are often seen sitting apathetically and fluffed up on the floor, making no attempt to escape when humans approach.

Affected birds will no longer consume food and have been reported as unable to swallow.

We can help by ensuring bird tables are kept clean. Pouring boiling hot water on surfaces once a month can help keep the bacteria at bay.

If you think a bird in your garden is suffering from this illness, please report your findings to Garden Wildlife Health via their website, www.gardenwildlifehealth.org
